Description

An existing ford on private property provides access across Mission Creek to a barn and livestock feeding operation. Most of the riparian corridor is not fenced and cattle can reach the stream wherever banks are low. The site has historically been used as a winter feedlot for cattle. The Nez Perce Soil and Water Conservation District (NPSWCD) has been working with this landowner since 2009 to address the resource concerns of erosion, high water temperatures, bacteria, nutrients and water quantity. The NPSWCD will install a bridge at a ford site that requires annual instream maintenance, to improve passage to 7.89 miles of upstream habitat. Six structures consisting of anchored logs, logjams, unanchored and anchored rocks, rootwads, and a weir will be installed instream on 0.05 mile, and will create 6 pools. Bank stabilization using root wads, rock, revetments and vegetation will occur on 0.08 mile. To connect off-channel habitat, 0.05 miles of bank will be lowered to create 0.04 acres of floodplain (channel connectivity). A 0.27 mi (0.5 acre) exclusion fence will prevent livestock access to the stream. A grazing management plan for a 12 acre pasture will be developed. Noxious weed control will occur on 0.53 riparian mile (0.5 acre). A combination of dormant stake plantings and rooted plants will be installed along 0.3 mile (3 acres) of stream corridor. A small stockpile of rock (0.1 acre) will be removed from the floodplain.

Project Benefit

The project goals include 1) restoration of channel function and 2) improve aquatic habitat suitability, and 3) reduce elevated water temperatures for salmonids
