Description

This project will conduct the 2021 northern Bering Sea (NBS) surface trawl survey. The resulting data will be used to: develop stock-specific juvenile abundance estimates and pre-season projections for adult Yukon River Chinook salmon returns; evaluate the application of juvenile catch data to pre-season forecasts for other species of salmon used for subsistence in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) region; and examine the impact of warming climate on the diet, growth, and energetic condition of juvenile salmon in the NBS.

Project Benefit

This project will assist fisheries management through pre-season forecast models of run size. Independently determined and reliable pre-season forecasts used in combination with traditional adult based forecasts will help promote sustainable fishing opportunities by subsistence users in the region by assisting with the communication of management plans, enabling management strategies to be developed consistent with stock status, and improving access to the available harvest. Additionally, the ability to predict adult run abundance several years into the future using juvenile based forecasts allows fishery managers and stakeholders to be more adaptive to changing run sizes years in advance. Information on juvenile diet and condition will provide an ecosystem context to the status of salmon as Arctic marine ecosystems shift to a warmer climate regime.
