Description

The Muckleshoot Tribe captured, enumerated, and estimated productivity of juvenile salmonids out of Newaukum Creek from January through July, 2019. The tribe also conducted spawning surveys for Chinook salmon in the late summer and fall of 2019 to estimate potential egg deposition for brood year 2019.

In out-migration year 2019 it was learned that Chinook used two different rearing strategies with Newaukum Creek Basin with 97% out-migrating as fry (less than or equal to 45mm), and 3% out-migrating as parr and smolts (>45mm). The tribe also estimated an egg-to-migrant survival rate of 24.7%, which indicates a great incubation period with minimal to no redd gravel scouring from high flows.

Project Benefit

The purpose of the project is to: 1) estimate juvenile abundance and productivity of out-migrant Chinook and coho salmon in Newaukum Creek; 2) understand the emigration timing, health, and condition of salmonids in Newaukum Creek; and 3) obtain main stem redd count data on lower 5.7 miles of Newaukum Creek to assess the cumulative effects, trends, and recovery actions on juvenile salmon abundance, health, and productivity over time.
