Description

Dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) was used to estimate adult summer chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta passage in the Anvik River from approximately June 15 to July 26 during both 2019 and 2021. Because of travel restrictions within the Village of Anvik due to Covid 19, the project was not operational in 2020. In 2019 a total of 249,014 (SE 2,034) summer chum salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site with 18,819 ( SE 273) estimated in 2021. A beach seine sample fishery was conducted to collect age, sex, and length (ASL) information from summer chum salmon in 2019. Because of record low summer chum salmon passage in to the Anvik River as well as high water levels in 2021, the beach seine sample fishery was only conducted on July 6 and July 9 and was discontinued for the remainder of the season, so ASL analysis could not be completed.

Project Benefit

The subsistence fishery in the Yukon River drainage is one of the largest in Alaska, and the importance of summer chum salmon in the fishery is increasing during this period of declining Chinook salmon runs. This project will provide daily estimates of summer chum salmon returning to the Anvik River drainage to ensure sufficient escapements for subsistence fishing opportunities, as well as to provide fishery managers important biological data which is used for drainagewide run reconstruction as well as preseason forecasts.
