Anchor River Salmon Habitat Protection

Kachemak Heritage Land Trust (KHLT) increased the size of the protected salmon rearing and spawning habitat on the Anchor River by purchasing and protecting a two-hectare parcel of undeveloped land. Adjacent to the 14.5-hectare Anchor River State Recreation Site and semi-adjacent to 22.26 hectares of KHLT-owned conservation land, this acquisition will further efforts to conserve properties along this corridor of the Anchor River in perpetuity. Including two hectares of wetlands, banks on both sides of the river (a total of over 304 meters of streambank), an island, downed logs, and gravel beds, protection of this habitat minimizes erosion and provides shelter, shade, and resting places to Chinook, coho, and pink salmon, Dolly Varden char, and steelhead.

This project will increase the protected conservation corridor along the anadromous Anchor River, protecting salmon habitat on a property otherwise vulnerable to development and entirely composed of riparian wetlands. Protecting this important spawning and rearing habitat in perpetuity will be of great value to the overall health of the salmon and steelhead population in the Anchor River.
