Description

The Karuk Tribe has conducted juvenile salmonid out-migrant monitoring in the mainstem Klamath River at Big Bar since 1997 and in the mainstem Salmon River since 2001. The Salmon River Restoration Council (SRRC) has cooperated with trapping operations since 2002 by providing labor for trap operations. The Tribe proposes to work in cooperation with SRRC and operate rotary traps seven days per week on the mainstem Klamath River and Salmon Rivers. Trapping operations will begin in March and continue into July, or until holding live fish is not feasible due to poor water quality. Water quality in the Salmon River has not been a problem therefore will continue through the August and September time frame. Monitoring will continue in the mainstem Klamath throughout the fall months (Oct-Dec) to capture fall redistribution of coho salmon juveniles.

Objective
• Build long term trend data for out-migrant salmonid monitoring on the mainstem Klamath River and Salmon River.
• Draft a comprehensive trapping report which includes data collected during the past 5 years of trapping effort.
• Review and upgrade the current trapping database.
• Mark and recapture

Project Benefit

Deliverable: Data collected during trapping operations will be checked for quality assurance and entered into the comprehensive trapping database where it will be usable for fisheries managers. A comprehensive technical report will be developed for the past 5 years of outmigrant trapping. Review and upgrade the current Microsoft Access database. Both trap sites offer opportunities to handle actual fish and can benefit other projects such as fish disease evaluations and or tissue collection for genetics work or fish health purposes.
