Description

The three purchased stream gages were installed and monitored, but due to delays in the execution of the grant agreement the stream gages were not installed in time to capture data on the first season. In October 2017, the Sonoma County fire storm destroyed two of the five installed stream gages. Since the three purchased gages were not installed prior to the firestorm they were not lost and were deployed during the second season. Due to the fire damage in the Sonoma Creek Watershed much of the local focus was on fire recovery efforts rather than streamflow improvements. SEC is seeking extensions with WCB, the majority funder, on the instream flow study and Sonoma Creek Streamflow Stewardship Plan. Unfortunately, FRGP funds are expiring and an extension was not possible, so within the time frame of this grant not all the deliverables could be met.

Project Benefit

The plan will help increase streamflows.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
This project was delayed by fire and has State funding to complete The Sonoma Creek Stewardship Plan (in progress) which will include the results of data analysis and describe plans for enhancing streamflow and improving stream stewardship in the Sonoma Creek watershed. The plan will describe potential streamflow restoration projects, including potential site locations; recommended water conservation BMPs and/or elements; water rights considerations and options; and provisional permissions from landowners. The project accomplishes the Steelhead Report Card's task, Angler Benefit. The project also accomplishes task CC-14-214-02 in the 2013 Task List of the Steelhead Restoration and Management Plan: "Conduct instream flow surveys using appropriate protocols and techniques to determine instream flow requirements that will protect all life stages of steelhead."
