Description

This project conducted subsistence salmon harvest surveys in Port Heiden in 2018, evaluated the current subsistence salmon permit system and made recommendations for a revised harvest monitoring program based on findings, and conducted key respondent interviews with Port Heiden residents to record observations and local traditional knowledge related to the availability of wild salmon resources for subsistence harvest.

Project Benefit

Subsistence harvest assessments provide fishery managers and users with a tool to assess stock status and trends as well as data to determine if management actions are needed to protect subsistence resources and subsistence fisheries. This project addresses the lack of comprehensive data available to both managers and community members on subsistence salmon harvest, use, and practices in Port Heiden.
