Description
We captured, enumerated, and estimated productivity of Juvenile salmonids migrating out of Newaukum Creek from January 10 to July 09, 2018. We also conducted spawning surveys for Chinook salmon in the late summer and fall of 2018 to estimate potential egg deposition for brood year 2018.
In out-migration year 2018 we learned that Chinook used two different rearing strategies within Newaukum Creek Basin in 2018 with 97% (201,336) out-migrating as fry (= 45mm), and 3% (6,228) out-migrating as parr and smolts (> 45 mm). We also estimated an egg-to-emigrant survival rate of 11.2%, which indicates an average incubation period with minimal redd gravel scouring from high flows.
One deviation was that this project was used to fund the operation of the rotary screw trap for outmigration year 2019.
Project Benefit
The primary goal of this study is to monitor and better understand Puget Sound Chinook abundance, and juvenile productivity within Newaukum Creek. The purpose of the project is to: 1) estimate juvenile abundance and productivity ofout-migrant Chinook and coho salmon in Newaukum Creek; 2) understand the emigration timing, health, and condition of salmonids in Newaukum Creek; and 3) obtain main stem redd count data on the lower 5.7 miles of Newaukum Creek to assess the cumulative effects, trends, and recovery actions on juvenile salmon abundance, health, and productivity over time.
