Description    


From 2018 through 2020, staff received letters of interest from 41 private landowners and public land managers. From those proposals, this project helped fund 10 shoreline vegetation and protection projects.
At seven sites, structures detrimental to juvenile salmon were removed from the riparian area (including cinder blocks, sand bags, dock structures, creosol wood, rock, metal, and wood debris); at 9 sites, streambanks were stabilized utilizing: brush layering (8 sites), trenched willows (1 site), and spruce tree revetments (1 site); at 4 sites, fencing was installed to protect riparian habitat; at 5 sites, light-penetrating gratewalks and stairs were installed to direct foot traffic and protect riparian habitat (riparian exclusion); and at all 10 sites riparian habitat was revegetated using native vegetated mat (9 sites), potted native alders (2 sites), paper birch (1 site), native riparian seed mix (1 site), and blue joint grass (1 site).

Project Benefit    


This project will result in the removal of detrimental structures from streams and the conservation and rehabilitation of riverbank, which together will help conserve and restore healthy salmon habitat and healthy salmon populations. It will also demonstrate to local residents, governmental agencies, and regulators the benefits of bio-engineered alternatives to the traditional use of riprap, concrete slabs, sheet pile, and wooden bulkheads for bank stabilization.
