Description

In 2018, this project improved stream habitat on a 0.5 km reach of Staney Creek, known as EMF2, on Prince of Wales Island. This was accomplished by placing approximately 200 second growth rootwad trees and four old-growth tip trees in side channels, on the floodplain, and in 12 instream structures. These structures increased channel complexity, creating pools and off-channel habitat throughout the .5 km reach and stabilizing stream banks in about .08 km of the same reach.

Project Benefit

This project will maintain and enhance fish habitat by: improving habitat conditions for juvenile salmonids; accelerating recovery of fluvial processes currently leading to bank erosion and channel widening; improving pool frequency and complexity through placement of rootwad trees; improving year-round holding and rearing habitat through pool creation and floodplain connectivity; and improving floodplain conditions by providing nurse logs and roughness elements for flood resilience.
