Description    


This project monitored stream flow at three sites in Southeast Alaska for the purpose of developing reservation of water applications (Peterson Creek, Freshwater Creek, and Windfall Creek).

The required five years of flow data was completed during this project for Thorne River and a reservation of water application (ROW) was filed with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. In order not to double count the stream reach, we have recorded zero stream miles assessed in the final metrics for this project and added Thorne River as a work site under the related project AK44920_ROW where both the reservation of water stream length and cfs reserved is recorded in the final metrics as well as the presence of the stream gage. Conversely, Eva Creek and Eva Outlet were added as work sites under this project and zeroed out in the final metrics of project AK44920_ROW as additional data was needed before an ROW could be filed as originally planned, but the stream was still assessed (gaged). Staff traveled to Eagle River four times to scope out places to install a stream gage and a good site was located, but no gage was installed during the project period as originally intended.

Project Benefit    


The rivers of SE AK support some of North America’s most viable and productive salmon and steelhead fisheries. Salmon and steelhead depend on sufficient quantities of water to meet their spawning, rearing, incubation, overwintering, and migration habitat requirements. This project will benefit salmon and steelhead populations (including those used for important subsistence fisheries) throughout SE AK by legally reserving water needed to sustain their production.
