Description

Spawning ground surveys were conducted in 22 stream reaches of the Mattole River watershed from November 12, 2017 to February 27, 2018 in a total of 162 surveys. In terms of live fish, survey teams saw 2764 Chinook salmon, 166 steelhead, no coho salmon, and 77 unidentified salmonids. Carcass counts included 177 Chinook salmon, one steelhead, no coho salmon, and 8 unidentified carcasses. Redds with fish on them included 153 Chinook and five steelhead redds. Estimated redd abundance was 2,202 Chinook (95% CI: 1,263 to 3,142) and 471 steelhead (95% CI: 310 to 633). With November rains stimulating spawning migration, but less rain in December, another series of storms in January, and little rain in February the flow conditions allowed frequent surveys with good visibility through most of the season. The steelhead numbers are low because the survey window for Chinook only partially overlaps the steellhead spawning season .

Project Benefit

Population estimates will assist with future restoration needs.
