Description

A previously buried pile of roofing felt and tile was uncovered on the margin of the project footprint near the Hoopa Valley High School. The material was tested and found to contain Chrysotile asbestos fibers. The Tribe contracted a licensed asbestos abatement contractor and approximately 45 cubic yards of materials was removed from the site, before it became clear that the extent and volume of materials was far greater than initially estimated. Upon consultation with Tribal Environmental Protection Agency (TEPA), the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the decision was made to postpone construction until a full investigation and abatement plan is completed. As of April 2019 the Tribe is waiting for TEPA and BIA to complete the abatement plan. These findings delayed the project to a point where project completion cannot be expected within the timeframe of the Grant Agreement.

Project Benefit

This project significantly improves ecological function and hydrologic connectivity in the historic floodplain of Supply Creek through levee/road removal and instream, off-channel, and riparian habitat creation and enhancement.
