Description

This project operated the Afognak River adult salmon enumeration weir from 2017 through 2019. Two field technicians were stationed at the field site for the duration of the sockeye salmon adult run; supplies needed to support the project objectives were purchased prior to and throughout each field season. Operation of the weir provided timely and accurate temporal/spatial estimates of escapements by age/sex/length, enabling inseason management adjustments, review of escapement goals, and the ability to maintain the sustainability of this important subsistence salmon run. All project objectives were completed.

Project Benefit

Timely and accurate escapement estimates of Afognak River sockeye salmon will allow for inseason management adjustments to maintain the sustainability of the Afognak River run and provide sustainable subsistence harvests for local residents.
