Description    


Stream habitat and fish distribution data for Northeast Sukkwan Island and North Kasook Inlet were collected during the summer and fall field season in 2016 and the spring of 2017. These final surveyed watersheds and dates were a result of an approved amendment in March of 2017 that resulted in an extension to complete stream habitat mapping and anadromous waters sampling on North Kasook Inlet in May of 2017, and the substituting of streams in Hasiah Bay for Rose Creek and upper Dunbar, also in May of 2017. However, when surveyed by boat to assess potential streams, none in Hasiah Bay appeared suitable for salmon, so no Hasiah Bay streams were ultimately surveyed. Utilizing the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Sport Fish Region V Stream Habitat Survey User Guide protocols, the locally hired field crew mapped and classified stream habitat and conducted anadromous fish surveys for approximately 4.5 miles of stream channel in the remaining watersheds, making over 280 fish observations and assessing potential fish passage barriers. The results of the fish distribution information collected resulted in three Anadromous Waters Catalog nominations, all on Northeast Sukkwan Islsnd. These nominations represent 2.5 miles of stream not previously included in the Anadromous Waters Catalog.

Project Benefit    


Northeast Sukkwan, Dunbar Inlet, North Kasook Inlet Lake, and Rose Creek watersheds support important subsistence salmon fisheries for the Haida people and the community of Hydaburg. This project will provide legal protection for approximately 10.7 kilometers of habitat in these watersheds through listing in Alaska’s Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes and provide baseline habitat information.
