Description

The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust is partnered with private landowners to acquire 5 parcels totaling about 12.3 acres, and to protect high quality riparian habitat and .37 miles of streambank on Nason Creek, a tributary of the Wenatchee River, which flows into the Columbia River. This reach of Nason Creek has a high percentage of the endangered spring Chinook and steelhead spawning in all of Nason Creek, which in turn has a high percentage in the entire Wenatchee basin. Nason Creek is a Category 2 stream, a major spawning area for spring Chinook and steelhead and a core area for bull trout, and is the highest priority in the Wenatchee Basin for both Protection and Restoration. Contiguous to the acquired parcels, Chelan County owns 22 acres with another 3,000 feet of riverfront that it intends to manage in cooperation with this protection project. The project included clean-up of derelict structures and debris on both parcels, one of which (Coaker) had become a major dumping ground. CDLT will manage habitat-compatible, non-motorized public access to Nason Creek. The acquisition will enable implementing future habitat restoration actions appropriate to this site.

Project Benefit

To buy and clean up some cool salmon habitat parcels that are contiguous to an existing public land holding, thus protecting habitat for ESA-listed Chinook and steelhead.
