Description
The South Fork and Middle Fork Reach Acquisition project acquired fee title interest to approximately 53 acres on the South Fork Nooksack River, between Skookum Creek and Van Zandt, and approximately 6 acres on the Middle Fork Nooksack River, just downstream of the mouth of Canyon Lake Creek. The project acquired over a mile of riverfront within reaches of the river identified as high priority for acquisition in order to protect high quality habitat at risk of degradation, to protect habitat forming processes, to facilitate restoration opportunities and remove mobile homes and outbuildings from the floodplain/riparian areas. Demolition of multiple structures was completed in September 2017 on the lower Middle Fork properties. These acquisitions and removal of structures will facilitate restoration by providing better opportunity to design and implement effective projects to address limiting factors, and then allow natural processes to persist post implementation. The WRIA 1 Board has partially funded the Todd Creek property. The PSAR funded amount is now $518,840, which is $161,160 less than the original request of $680,000.
