Description

In the fall of 2012, the 4th of July Creek Private Culvert Replacement PCSRF Project #065 08 SA replaced an undersized culvert that was a velocity barrier to steelhead and Chinook salmon passage with a steel bridge. The project enhanced fish access to 8.3 miles of habitat upstream.

In the spring of 2014, a high water event occurred that required rock repair in front of the bridge’s concrete sills and in the streambed where rock was washed out.

The bridge deck was removed to expose the area underneath the bridge, and the area was prepped for repair work. Repair work included placement of larger rock at both bridge abutments and in the streambed. The bridge deck was returned to its original site and a downstream grade control structure was installed.

The repair work will fulfill the intended outcome of the original culvert replacement project (PCSRF Project #065 08 SA) by providing a safe road crossing that allows unimpeded fish passage to upstream habitat.

Project Benefit

Project actions will benefit Snake River Spring/Summer-run Chinook salmon and Snake River Steelhead Salmon through the stabilization of the bridge by improving the degraded stream substrate and water quality that was caused by a high water event. The repair and maintenance is expected to be effective up to and including a 100-year flood event.
