Description

With a currently fully-functional GIS section and complete acquisition of LiDAR data (acquired through previous PCSR funding) for 167,037 acres of the Hoh U&A area (Hoh watershed to upstream extent of ONP infrastructure plus five independent drainages north and south of the Hoh River mouth), the Hoh Tribe was in a position to make great strides in landscape analysis, watershed management planning and effective development of reach-specific salmon habitat recovery strategies. Continued GIS collaboration with the Army Corps of Engineers, USGS, ONP, HUD, NOAA, WDFW, NPCLEG, NWIFC and local NGOs will ultimately produce effective land use strategies, facilitate water quality data organization and transmission and achieve geo- and temporal referencing of legacy fisheries data (spawner surveys and smolt trapping). Funding supported the GIS specialist’s wages and benefits as well as trainings, travel and supplies.

Some notable accomplishments from this project was SQL server database system was developed and implemented that allows for end users to make decisions through GIS data analysis. This makes for more thorough and informed decision making.

Project Benefit

GIS organization and analysis of geo- and temporally referenced fish utilization data in conjunction with LiDAR bare earth imagery and current aerial photography will document and prioritize valuable spawning, rearing and refugia habitat throughout the study area. Future habitat enhancement efforts will be directed by this analysis and prioritization.
