Description

The project involved the ongoing monitoring of critical stock in streams within the Dungeness watershed for the purpose of determining salmonid abundance/escapements, recording physical indices (e.g., size), and assessing trends. PCSRF funds partially supported staff and supplies necessary to conduct the project. Completed tasks are now organized below according to worksite (per NOAA request). Details are in the final progress report (uploaded to Project Progress tab).

JIMMYCOMELATELY CK:
Smolt trapping: The Tribe measured productivity by installing smolt traps, and trapping and releasing coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts during downstream migration in the springs of 2016 and 2017. Details are in the final progress report.
Spawner surveys: The Tribe assisted WDFW with Coho surveys during the later portion of 2016 Coho run.

MATRIOTTI CK:
Smolt trapping: The Tribe measured productivity by installing smolt traps, and trapping and releasing coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts during downstream migration in the springs of 2016 and 2017. Details are in the final progress report.

In addition, the Tribe and WDFW measured efficiency of the Dungeness screw trap by releasing marked coho and steelhead smolts from Matriotti’s trap. This allowed for wild coho and wild steelhead production estimates.

SIEBERT CK:
Smolt trapping: The Tribe measured productivity by installing smolt traps, and trapping and releasing coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts during downstream migration in the springs of 2016 and 2017. Details are in the final progress report.
Spawner surveys: The Tribe assisted WDFW with Coho surveys during the later portion of 2016 and 2017 Coho runs.

MCDONALD CK:
Smolt trapping: The Tribe measured productivity by installing smolt traps, and trapping and releasing coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts during downstream migration in the springs of 2016 and 2017. Smolt catches and other species caught in the trap were tallied each season. Related trap data for 2016 and preliminary smolt trap cumulative catches during the 2017 trapping season were compiled.
Spawner surveys: The Tribe assisted WDFW with Coho surveys during the later portion of 2016 and 2017 Coho runs.

BELL CK:
Smolt trapping: The Tribe measured productivity by installing smolt traps, and trapping and releasing coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts during downstream migration in the springs of 2016 and 2017. Smolt catches and other species caught in the trap were tallied each season. Related data for 2016 and preliminary smolt trap cumulative catches during the 2017 trapping season were compiled.

DUNGENESS RIVER:
Smolt trapping: Population estimates were developed by releasing temporary marked coho and steelhead smolts released from Matriotti smolt trap and recapturing in the Dungeness screw trap.
Spawner surveys: Redd counts were conducted, as part of spawning ground surveys and population estimates for Coho and Steelhead, and Chinook at the Dungeness worksite, which includes its tributaries. This occurred in conjunction with adult population monitoring carcass counts, and included flagging, recording counts, timing, GPS and other relevant information. Note that staff were unable to complete steelhead surveys during 2017 due to high flows, which required interpolation in determining production estimates.
Adult population monitoring: Live fish counts for pink and chum salmon were conducted in conjunction with spawning ground surveys and carcass counts.
Carcass counts: Carcass counts of Coho and Chum occurred in conjunction with spawning ground surveys and live adult counts. Species, sex, length, cwt detection were recorded, and scales were sent to WDFW for analyses or storage, with separate funding.

Project Benefit

Stock assessments help co-managers and biologists better understand the status of salmonids in the Dungeness Watershed, and identify key riparian areas for protection, timing of out-migration related to other stocks, etc. Assessment of steelhead data is needed to understand recovery needs for this species. Redd surveys help assess number of spawners, as well as habitat conditions. All of these activities are important for accomplishing ESA-listed salmon recovery monitoring, particularly status/trend monitoring (of VSP parameters via stock assessments, and other indicators like habitat quality).
