Description

This project estimated the Chinook and chum salmon escapement on the Chena River using a combination of tower and dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) counts and estimated the age, sex, and length (ASL) composition of the Chinook escapement from spawned-out carcasses. In 2014, salmon were enumerated from 10 July through 4 August and the estimates of escapement for Chinook and chum salmon were 7,192 (SE=73) and 13,294 (SE=73), respectively. In 2015, salmon were enumerated from 30 June through 6 August and the estimates of escapement for Chinook and chum salmon were 6,291 (SE=169) and 8,620 (SE=153), respectively.

Project Benefit

Escapement monitoring provides the foundation for salmon management in Alaska. This project will gather Chinook salmon escapement and composition data for one of the largest spawning systems in the Yukon River drainage, supporting sound management of the subsistence fisheries it supports.
