Strategic Conservation of Important Salmon Habitat in Southcentral Alaska – Phase 2

Two parcels of land encompassing important salmon habitat were permanently protected through this project. The Bear Walk/Hillstrand Conservation Easement was completed in November of 2016 and permanently protects 145 acres of land near Afognak Point in the southeastern portion of Afognak Island. The property includes marine, estuarine, wetland and riparian habitat important for salmon. The Eagle River Greenbelt Conservation Easement was completed in 2014 and protects 160 acres of the broad flood plain of Eagle River including high value wetlands and riparian zones.

Because funds allocated in this project contributed to a work site reported under project AK44712, some of the funds originally allocated to this project are reported under AK44712 (the project fully spent allocated funds).

Permanently conserving the most important lands and waterways in the project area will protect critical migration, spawning, rearing, and overwintering habitat for Chinook, coho, sockeye, chum, and pink salmon as well as steelhead. This project will directly build upon local, state, and federal habitat conservation planning efforts to help ensure sustainable salmon populations in Southcentral Alaska.
