Description    


Reservation of water applications for Rocky Pass Creek, the Speel River, and five reaches of the Lost River were filed with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Cowee Creek and Chilkoot River reservation applications, previously filed with DNR with three years of gage data, were updated using the complete five years of stream gage data. A Certificate of Reservation was awarded for the Harding River. The previously-filed Peterson Creek multiple-reach reservation application was converted into nine separate reservation applications and re-filed with DNR. The previously-filed Nakwasina River multiple-reach reservation application was converted into seven separate reservation applications and refiled with DNR. Other reservation of water applications were worked on, but not completed.

Project Benefit    


The rivers and lakes of SEAK support some of North America’s most viable and productive salmon and steelhead fisheries. Salmon and steelhead are dependent upon sufficient quantities of water to meet their spawning, rearing, incubation, overwintering, and migration habitat requirements. This project will benefit salmon and steelhead populations (including those used for important subsistence fisheries) throughout SEAK by legally reserving water needed to sustain salmon and steelhead habitat and production.
