Description
This project made it possible for CRITFC to initiate the implementation of a Tribal Workforce Development Program, in cooperation with the tribes, to increase employment of tribal members in professional careers protecting tribal fishery resources. The goal of the Program is to create research education and training pathways for CRITFC tribal members to pursue and achieve science, technology, engineering, law, government, and math (STEM) degrees in natural resources at post-secondary educational programs at junior college, college, and graduate levels.
This project enabled CRITFC staff to coordinate efforts among member tribes, federal, state, and local officials in identifying, planning, and implementing tribal workforce opportunities through specialized training and placement at tribal organizations and federal and state agencies. Two brochures were developed focusing on tribal salmon restoration successes. CRITFC staff made presentations at 11 events and held eight workshops where there were over 140 participants. Forty students were educated at different colleges on tribal salmon restoration efforts and on potential careers in these fields. Below are some of the efforts:
Community Outreach & Partnerships:
Under this project coordinated efforts were established to collaborate with key partners essential to the success of the Tribal Workforce Development Initiative. This component of the program took the form of several different outreach strategies including on-site visits and presentations on tribal restoration successes at conferences and events, as well as on email and social media platforms. CRITFC staff attended the NIEA Conference, ATNI Education Meetings, OIEA Youth Conferences and other tribal education related summits and meetings. A weekly STEM-Related Workforce Development e-newsletter was sent out to key stakeholders. Additionally, the CRITFC website was continuously updated with related information.
College Outreach: TRAIL Project Summer Internship:
One TRAIL Project Summer Intern from the Yakima Nation worked on a project focused in the Grande Ronde basin, where they conducted work to understand the status and trends of the Chinook and Steelhead populations and the habitat they rely on. The intern worked alongside Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife crews and assisted with electrofishing surveys, note taking, and other field and office tasks related to conducting tributary fish population assessments for Chinook Salmon and Steelhead. They also assisted CRITFC staff with collection of non-lethal fin tissue and stomach diet samples for a pilot food web study. Outreach: Tribal Salmon Camp:
Through CRITFC’s Tribal Salmon Camp, 20 students from member tribes participated in on-site discussions with current Tribal Natural Resources staff that shared current broad issues as well as those within the local community. The Tribal Salmon Camp provided opportunities for students to participate in field studies and learn about water qualities, the salmon life cycle, ethno botany, and ecology. The 2014 camp was held in collaboration with the Yakama Nation and participants spent five days on the Yakama Reservation in Washington.
College Outreach:
TRAIL Project Research Internship: Teaching Rising American Indian Leaders in Natural Resources and Fisheries Research
This project contributed to staff time to coordinate four tribal interns in the TRAIL Project. Interns selected a project with a Tribal Natural Resources focus and conducted 120 hours of research, culminating in a final research paper. They partnered with a faculty mentor, who guided their research project and a mentor from their tribe’s Natural Resources Department. This program ran during the academic year, and participants were able to participate from their college campus. Three students completed their internship projects during Fall 2014 and one student conducting research in Spring 2015.
Project Benefit
This project increased outreach efforts to bring awareness of CRITFC’s Tribal Workforce Development Initiative and all of the tribal fishery restoration successes. It established partnerships with key stakeholders; identified needs and programs to establish with member tribes that will increase interest in and education on Salmon-related issues.
