Description

Under this project 10,000 adult sockeye were trapped at the Priest Rapids Dam and then transported to the Lake Cle Elum and outplanted. Also the YN staff traveled to Canada to meet with the Okanagan Nation Alliance and assisted them with their sockeye program. Also a 30’ circular tank was purchased to aid in the acclimation of the sockeye at Cle Elum Lake.

The following number of DNA samples were taken during the trapping and will be analyzed under another funding source:

July 02nd : # 1250 collected 200 DNA samples taken
July 03rd: # 1936 collected 200 DNA samples taken 10 radio tags
July 05th : # 1751 collected 100 DNA samples taken
July 06th : # 1648 collected 50 DNA samples taken
July 09th : # 1076 collected 100 DNA samples taken
July 10th : # 500 collected 50 DNA samples taken
July 11th : # 925 collected 100 DNA samples taken 20 radio tags
July 12th : # 914 collected 100 DNA samples taken 20 radio tags

Project Benefit

The main goal of this project is to reintroduce sockeye back to Yakima River basin (est. numbers of 200,000 historically). They were extirpated from the basin in the late 1890’s when crib dams were built for irrigation storage. This prevented adults from returning to their spawning areas above the five lakes. Also, continue to think outside the box concerning sockeye. This could include removal of evasive species (lake trout) through fishing derbies or gill netting off of spawning areas or fertilizing the lakes to enhance zooplankton (food source for young sockeye) The Yakama Nation and the other federal and state agencies feel that Lake Cle Elum is the best suited lake for the reintroduction as its upper watershed is within the Alpine lakes wilderness area and the rest is in forest service control.
