Description    


This project helped fund 17 shoreline revegetation and stabilization projects in the Matanuska-Susitna Basin. Project partners included the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB), Friends of the Mat-Su, the City of Wasilla, and both the Wasilla and Upper Susitna Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Over the life of the project, 300 linear feet of structures detrimental to salmon was removed from local lakes. A total of 2,141 linear feet of streambank and lakeshore was re-vegetated using brush layers, trenched willows, live siltation, and willow bundles. Approximately 7,668 square feet of riparian area was re-vegetated using transplanted native vegetation and native vegetated mat. Two hundred twenty linear feet of streambank was protected using cabled spruce trees and elevated, light-penetrating walkways.

At one work site (2011 Sunshine Creek), this project repaired and stabilized a stream bank with coir logs and willow cuttings; planted native vegetation in the riparian area (including local vegetative mat), and installed light-penetrating gratewalks to protect the stream bank from human use.

At three work sites (2012 Jarvis Deshka River, 2013 Fish Creek, and 2012 Turner Wasilla Creek) this project repaired stream banks with vegetation (using coir logs and willow cuttings), restoring the stability of the bank and its value as salmon habitat.

At three sites (2013 Alaska Sailing Club Big Lake, 2012 Alaska Sailing Club Big Lake, and 2013 Lalonde Big Lake) this project removed 90’, 100’, and 110’, respectively, of rock, metal, wood, and concrete debris; repaired and stabilized the lake shore with vegetation (using coir logs and willow cuttings); and planted native vegetation in the riparian area (using native vegetation and local vegetative mat).

At nine work sites (2011 Government Creek, 2011 Mystrom Finger Lake, 2011 Arnold Big Lake, 2012 Sunshine Creek, 2012 Newcomb Park Wasilla Lake, 2012 Little Meadow Creek, 2013 DOT Trunk Road Carnegie Creek, 2012 Chickaloon McRoberts Creek, 2013 DOT Trunk Road Unnamed Trib) this project repaired and stabilized stream banks or lake shores with vegetation (usually with coir logs and willow cuttings) and planted native vegetation in the riparian area (using native vegetation and local vegetative mat).

Project Benefit    


This project will result in the removal of detrimental structures from streams; increased fish habitat quantity and quality, riparian vegetation, riparian function, and river bank stability; and more responsible development of riparian areas. These results will help ensure healthy salmon populations and salmon habitat.
