Description

This project restored 1,800 feet of salmonid spawning and rearing habitat on the Sitkoh River in Southeast Alaska. Past logging practices destabilized the stream and caused it to flow down an adjacent logging road. This project restored the natural function of the stream and adjacent floodplain by installing log-jam structures in the stream and large wood structures in the floodplain.

Project Benefit

Bank stabilization and restoration of stream channel morphology will improve both the amount and quality of spawning and rearing habitat for pink and coho salmon and steelhead. These habitat improvements should result in more fish for commercial, sport, and subsistence harvest in the area. Improved catch rates across the noted fisheries will result in increased revenues for commercial fishermen and communities and more fish for consumption by sport and subsistence anglers and other consumers. Collaborative projects focused on the improvement of fish habitat that demonstrate successful results should result in more projects of a similar nature throughout the region.
