Description    


From 2011 through 2013, Palmer Soil and Water Conservation District removed the following invasive species from seven work sites in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, as described below: Phalaris arundinacea, Melilotus alba, Melilotus officinalis, Linaria vulgaris, Vicia Cracca, Hordeum jubatum, Tripleurospermum inodorum, Crepis Tectorum, Sonchus arvensis, Cirsium arvense. Methods included hand pulling, mowing, and tarping.

At four work sites (Little Susitna River, Kroto Creek,Trapper Creek, and Moose Creek) invasive plant removal focused on the riparian area; at the Matanuska River work site, removal took place in both riparian and instream areas; at the Knik River, removal took place instream and in the riparian area; and at the Matanuska River Park, removal focused on upland areas.

Project Benefit    


This project will identify, control, and prevent the germination and colonization of the highly invasive plant species P. arundinacea, M. alba, L. salicaria, E. nuttallii, and E. canadensis in salmon streams in the Matanuska-Susitna region. These species disturb soil hydrology and the necessary gravel surfaces of streams needed for salmon reproduction; reducing their impact will promote healthy salmon streams and allow damaged streams to recover natural stream flow and generate native vegetation.
