Description

In Elk Creek, a tributary to the South Umpqua River within the Tribes Ancestral Territory, the Tribe partnered with two local watershed action groups The South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership and the Partnership for Umpqua Rivers as well as the Umpqua National Forest Tiller Ranger District, to mount an expansive cooperative fish habitat restoration project. PCSRF funds were used to support project management, beaver reintroduction, and riparian restoration. Specifically, .13 miles of riparian stream bank was restored through invasive species removal and native planting. Four beavers were reintroduced into the watershed to restore .2 miles of instream habitat. In total .33 miles of stream was treated.

Project Benefit

Increase beaver constructed pools within the watershed from 1 to 4 and maintain at least 4 beavers in the watershed
Decrease the width to depth ratio of the streams on private lands from 23 to 17
Increase residual pool depth on private lands from 2.5 feet to 3.5 feet
Stabilize 800 feet of eroding streambank
Maintain a 5 cubic feet per second increase at the Elk Creek stream gage in August
Reduce noxious weed cover to less than 1 percent of riparian vegetation
