Salmon Habitat Surveys

Initial project efforts involved using multiple field survey methods within several important ADF&G “salmon index” streams across Southeast Alaska. Surveys of the physical habitat in each stream system collected data to document locations of; stream courses, location of potential stream barriers, stream crossing structures, geomorphic extent, predominate substrate, gradient, and width using a modified USFS Tier II sampling protocol. Foot surveys were used to locate and document the specific locations and numbers of spawning salmon adults. The second phase of the project evolved into the actual development for the landscape-based predictive model using the digital elevation data (captured during space shuttle missions using synthetic aperture radar) to generate slope and elevation metrics. This phase also included additional field surveys necessary to fill data gaps, reduce bias in model output, and assess accuracy of initial output.

Increase knowledge of site specific habitat characteristics (vegetation, substrate, hydrology, watershed function). Allow the department to document salmon habitat in advance of proposed development projects to ensure habitat protection laws are effective.
