Description
A contract was developed with a subcontractor in December of 2001 to complete the feasibility study. The study was completed in April of 2002. Results indicated that while the proposed kelt reconditioning program may not truly mimic natural pre-dam life history for Okanogan steelhead, it could serve as a valuable experimental interim recovery strategy for endangered Upper Columbia ESU summer steelhead. The report included specific recommendations for kelt trapping/release; reconditioning facility development; staff training; hold, feed and reconditioning at the Cassimer Bar Facility; monitoring and evaluation; adaptive management; and termination criteria. As an additional component of this project, kelt reconditioning was also addressed in a draft Okanogan Basin summer steelhead HGMP.
Project Benefit
Improve repeat spawning success of Upper Columbia ESU summer steelhead.
