Description

The primary goal of this project was to hire a laboratory technician to process the backlog of genetic samples in our possession. Analyzing these samples provided for the improved understanding of genetic interactions and variability of several salmon and steelhead populations in the Columbia Basin. DNA has been extracted from approximately 10,000 tissue samples from projects including: Fall Chinook Salmon Stock Composition (PCSRF 2002-5-04), Snake River steelhead kelts, Klickitat River steelhead, South Fork Salmon River Chinook salmon, and Clearwater River Chinook salmon.

Project Benefit

DNA has been extracted from approximately 10,000 tissue samples from projects including: fall Chinook salmon stock composition in the Columbia Basin, Snake River steelhead kelts, Klickitat River steelhead, South Fork Salmon River Chinook salmon, and Clearwater River Chinook salmon. Hiring a technician will bring CRITFC up to date on genetic sample analysis and report writing.

The project resulted in Identification of three distinct fall Chinook stocks, genetic structure of Chinook salmon in the South Fork Salmon River, and a better understanding of genetic variability of native steelhead in the Klickitat River and influences from an introduced hatchery stock.
